{"id":875,"date":"2021-01-26T13:24:22","date_gmt":"2021-01-26T20:24:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayjennings.com\/blog\/?p=875"},"modified":"2021-01-26T13:24:26","modified_gmt":"2021-01-26T20:24:26","slug":"show-vs-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayjennings.com\/blog\/2021\/01\/26\/show-vs-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Show vs Business"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Probably the worst piece of advice I received when I started performing professionally was, \u201c<em>Do a good show and word of mouth will keep the bookings coming.<\/em>\u201d I had a good show (and still have a stack of testimonials as proof) but within a few years I burned out and gave up \u2014 I was barely making an existence, much less an actual living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was back in the day before the internet, so no way to look up info on marketing yourself, and I lived in Alaska, where there were not exactly a plethora of performers who I could learn from, so it was almost all trial-and-error. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mostly error. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I couldn\u2019t seem to get over that hump where there were enough shows coming in to be able to raise my prices, be choosy about which gigs I would take, and just get to that next level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had the show part down \u2014 but didn\u2019t have a clue about the business part. I wish someone had impressed upon me the importance of the second part of the phrase <strong>show business<\/strong>.
